Best Time to Visit Rajasthan: A Month-by-Month Guide

The best time to visit Rajasthan is October to March, and the best of that is November to February. Days sit between 20 and 28°C, the light is clear, and fort sightseeing — which is almost entirely outdoors and involves a great deal of walking uphill — is comfortable rather than punishing.

Rajasthan is desert. The seasonal swing is severe: Jaisalmer can pass 45°C in May and drop to 5°C on a January night. The month you pick changes the trip more here than in almost any other Indian destination.

Month by month

Month Typical daytime Verdict
October 25–33°C Season opens. Post-monsoon greenery still visible around Udaipur. Warm but manageable.
November 22–29°C Excellent. Pushkar Camel Fair falls this month. Book well ahead.
December 18–25°C, nights 8–10°C Excellent. Peak season. Desert nights are genuinely cold — pack accordingly.
January 16–24°C, nights 5–8°C Excellent. Clearest light of the year. Jaipur Literature Festival.
February 20–28°C The best all-round month. Warm days, cool nights, no rain.
March 26–34°C Good in the first half. Holi. Heat builds noticeably by the end.
April 33–40°C Hot. Sightseeing becomes an early-morning and late-afternoon activity only.
May 38–45°C Severe. Not recommended for a fort-and-palace itinerary.
June 38–44°C, humid late Severe, with the monsoon building.
July–August 30–36°C, humid Monsoon. Udaipur is at its most beautiful — lakes full, hills green — and the rest of the state is not.
September 28–34°C Monsoon ending. Improving week by week, and good value before October rates.

When is the best time for a Rajasthan honeymoon?

December to February. Cool enough for a lake-facing terrace dinner in Udaipur, cold enough at night in Jaisalmer for a desert camp to feel like an occasion rather than an endurance test. They are also the months our Rajasthan luxury tour packages are built around, because a heritage courtyard is only worth having when the evenings are mild.

Is the monsoon worth considering?

For Udaipur specifically, yes. July and August fill the lakes, green the Aravallis and cut rates sharply, and Udaipur handles rain far better than the desert cities do. For a Golden Triangle or Jaisalmer-inclusive itinerary, no.

Which festivals are worth planning around?

  • Pushkar Camel Fair — November, dates set by the Kartik Purnima full moon. Extraordinary, and accommodation in Pushkar sells out months ahead.
  • Jaipur Literature Festival — late January. Fills the city’s hotels.
  • Desert Festival, Jaisalmer — February, at Sam Sand Dunes.
  • Holi — March. Rajasthan is one of the best places in India to see it, and one of the harder places to find a hotel room during it.

Any of these will reshape a Jaipur, Jodhpur and Udaipur itinerary, so it is worth fixing the dates before the hotels.

How cold does it actually get?

Cold enough to matter. December and January nights in Jaisalmer, Bikaner and Mount Abu fall to 5–8°C, and desert camps are canvas. Fort interiors are stone and unheated. A proper jacket is not optional on a winter Rajasthan trip, which surprises a lot of people packing for “desert”. What that means for the Jaisalmer desert leg in particular is on the Rajasthan tour packages page.
