When to go

Best Jan–Feb, Nov–Dec; good Mar, Oct.

About Rajasthan

The classic triangle is Jaipur, Jodhpur and Udaipur, each with a distinct character: Jaipur for scale, Jodhpur for the fort above the blue city, and Udaipur for lakes. Jaisalmer adds a desert leg if you have the days.

Best time to visit

October to March is the season. November to February gives cool days and cold desert nights. April to June is severely hot and best avoided for fort sightseeing.

Top attractions

  • Amber Fort and City Palace in Jaipur
  • Mehrangarh Fort above Jodhpur
  • Lake Pichola and the City Palace in Udaipur
  • Ranakpur Jain temples
  • Jaisalmer fort and the Thar desert
  • Chand Baori stepwell at Abhaneri

Travel tips

  • Visit forts at opening time, both for light and to beat coach groups
  • Distances between cities are long, break drives with a heritage stop
  • Heritage hotels are worth the premium here more than most places
  • Cover shoulders and remove shoes at temples
