Dubai is the short-haul break that genuinely fits a long weekend from India. Flying time is roughly three to three and a half hours from Delhi or Mumbai, the clock is an hour and a half behind India, and there is no jet lag to recover from at either end. That, more than anything on the skyline, is the argument for it.
Three nights is enough if the days are kept separate rather than blended together. One day belongs to the modern city: the Burj Khalifa with a sunset slot booked well in advance because they sell out, the fountain afterwards, and the Museum of the Future if architecture interests you more than shopping does. One day belongs to old Dubai, which most weekend itineraries skip and should not — the Deira and Bur Dubai souks, the abra crossing over the creek for a couple of dirhams, and the wind-tower lanes of Al Fahidi. And one belongs to the desert: a dune drive out of the city and a camp that stays overnight rather than turning back after dinner, which is an entirely different experience from the afternoon version.
Season moves comfort and price in opposite directions. November to March is the pleasant window and the expensive one. April and October are warm but workable, with the middle of the day spent indoors. June to August is properly hot, above 40°C, and hotel rates fall accordingly — which is why a summer Dubai weekend can cost close to half a winter one if you are content to plan around the heat rather than ignore it.
On paperwork: Indian passport holders need a UAE visa arranged before travel, although holders of a valid US visa, a US green card, or a UK or EU residence permit have generally been eligible for a visa on arrival. These rules change, so confirm the current position before booking flights. Beyond that, the metro covers most of the modern city cheaply, dress is modest in the older districts and at mosques, and Friday brunch is a local institution worth reserving ahead if your weekend takes one in.

How to plan it
Because this is an overseas package, the quote should show three numbers rather than one — the package price, 5% GST, and the tax collected at source. TCS on foreign tour packages explains the mechanism and, more usefully, how you get that money back when you file your return, which is the part almost nobody in Indian travel bothers to spell out.
If the weekend might stretch to five or six nights, the Dubai tour packages page covers what the extra days are best spent on, including Abu Dhabi and the parts of the emirate a three-night trip has to leave out.
