The best months to visit Bali are April to June and September to October. Both sit inside the dry season but outside the July–August peak, which means reliable weather, open beach clubs, and villa rates 25–40% below high season.
Bali has two seasons rather than four. The dry season runs roughly April to September, the wet season October to March. Temperature barely moves — 27 to 32°C year round on the coast, several degrees cooler in Ubud and the highlands.
Month by month
| Month | Weather | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| January | Wettest month. Heavy afternoon rain, humid. | Cheapest villas. Fine if you are there for the spa and the food. |
| February | Still wet, easing late in the month. | Low crowds, low prices. Nusa Penida crossings can be cancelled in swell. |
| March | Transitional. Drier week by week. | Good value. Nyepi, the day of silence, closes the island entirely for 24 hours — including the airport. |
| April | Dry season begins. Green landscape, low humidity. | One of the two best months. |
| May | Dry, clear, comfortable. | Arguably the single best month. Rice terraces still green from the rains. |
| June | Dry and clear, crowds building. | Excellent. Book villas well ahead. |
| July | Driest, and busiest. | Peak season. Highest rates, heaviest traffic in Canggu and Seminyak. |
| August | Dry, windy on the south coast. | Peak season. Best surf at Uluwatu; worst value. |
| September | Dry, crowds thinning. | The other best month. Peak conditions at shoulder prices. |
| October | First rains, still mostly dry. | Very good value. Landscape starts greening again. |
| November | Wet season proper. | Short heavy downpours, usually afternoon. Low prices. |
| December | Wet, then the Christmas–New Year spike. | 20 Dec–5 Jan is the most expensive fortnight of the year, with minimum-stay rules. |
When is the best time for a Bali honeymoon?
May, June or September. You want dry evenings for the things a honeymoon is actually built around — a cliffside dinner at Uluwatu, a floating breakfast, a sunset on the beach — and those are the months that deliver them without July’s crowds. They are also the months to plan a Bali honeymoon package around.
When should you go for surfing?
May to September for the west coast — Uluwatu, Padang Padang, Canggu — when the dry-season south-easterlies groom the swell. November to March flips it: the east coast around Nusa Dua and Sanur works better.
Does Nyepi affect travel?
Yes, and more than most guides say. On Nyepi, the Balinese day of silence, the entire island shuts for 24 hours. No flights in or out, no vehicles, no lights after dark, hotel guests confined to their property. The date moves each year with the Saka calendar, usually falling in March. It is a remarkable thing to experience if you plan for it and a lost day if you do not. It is one of the fixed points any Bali tour package has to be built around.
What about rainy season — is it worth avoiding?
Not automatically. Wet season in Bali means an hour or two of heavy afternoon rain most days, not continuous grey. Mornings are frequently clear. If your trip is centred on Ubud, spas, food and culture rather than beach days, January to March offers the same island at 40% less. Where that saving actually lands is set out in the Bali trip cost breakdown.
